Participant FAQ

Q: What are the rules for the event?
A: These can be found on the Rules page of this website

Q: What age do I have to be to participate?
A: Crazy Craft: Participants must be 14+ (with parental signature if under 18). Canoes & Kayaks: Ages 5–10 must be in a vessel with an adult, Ages 11–13 need adult supervision (with parental signature), 13+ can paddle solo with permission (with parental signature).

Q: Do I need a lifejacket?
A: Yes. Lifejackets are mandatory for all participants at all times.

Q: Where do I start?
If you are a Canoe, Kayak or Paddleboard you will be starting at Canton at 10am. If you are a Crazy Craft you will start at Sylvan Glen at 11am.

Q: Do I need padding experience?
A: The event follows the Ganaraska River, which can be fast in places, as well as shallow enough that you have to get out of your craft, in April, and it could be snowing! We recommend you at least know how to paddle and control your craft. Be prepared for the weather and the chance you may fall in the water. We do have water safety following the event but they may not get to you instantly so make sure you can get yourself dry and warm as quick as possible.

Q: Is the water cold?
A: Yes. It’s early spring, you will probably get wet, so wetsuits are strongly recommended.

Q: What do I do with my dry clothes?
A: We recommend having someone at the finish with dry clothes, if not pack a dry bag and leave dry clothes in your vehicle in case you lose your dry bag. You will get wet so plan for it! There will be warming rooms and changing at the finish line.

Q: We only have one vehicle? What do I do with it?
A: We recommend dropping your canoe, kayak or crazy craft at your start location (it will be safe) and then driving to Jack Burger Sport Complex in Port Hope to drop your vehicle off. You can then get the shuttle bus back to your start location before the start. Please allow enough time in your morning to do this as there will be no shuttles back to the start locations after the event has started. The will be shuttles from the finish back to JBSC to get your vehicle, and then you can pick up your craft.

Q: I lost my craft on the river, how do I get it back?
A: You and your team (if you have one) are responsible for your craft. If you have to abandon it or you get pulled from the river for your safety it is up to you to secure your craft and then retrieve it after the event. The event organizers can advise but we are not responsible for recovering lost or damaged craft.

Q: Can I drink alcohol during the race?
A: No. Alcohol and drugs are not permitted before or during the event. Police will be located along the course checking participants and craft.
