Date Change – Press Release
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 6, 2014
Float your Fanny Down the Ganny Date Change to April 19
Port Hope, ON – Old Man Winter has been relentless this season, leaving the Float your Fanny
organizing committee no choice but to move the date of the 33rd annual event from Saturday
April 5 to Saturday April 19. It is hoped the later date will give Mother Nature enough time to
show us signs of spring.
The ice storm of 2013 has left an unprecedented number of trees down along the Ganaraska
River and the persistent cold weather has managed to keep the waterway frozen. The damage
and associated logistical concerns requires time and manpower to tackle. The Float Your Fanny
team want to ensure a safe race for all participants and spectators, and must work with the
forecast and wait (patiently) until the ice dissipates to properly prepare the river and riverbank.
The 33rd Float Your Fanny Down the Ganny is now scheduled for Easter weekend, so (re)mark
your calendars and invite your family and friends to come and celebrate this annual event.
In the event that the River Race cannot take place on April 19, due to inclement weather,
dangerously high water or, dare we say, a frozen waterway, the Float your Fanny Committee
will cancel the race for 2014 on Thursday April 17. Announcements will be made on local radio
stations, posted to both the Float your Fanny website and facebook page.
Fingers crossed for a spring thaw and a sunny Saturday because the Float Your Fanny team has
many exciting plans for Fannyville (the riverbank along Cavan Street). Plus, there are multiple
categories for those looking to brave the river; Canoes, Kayaks, Crazy Craft and the new Boater‐
Cross category. Canoes and Kayaks will launch from Canton at 10am, Crazy Crafts will launch
from Sylvan Glen at 11am and the Boater‐Cross will launch from Optimist Park at noon. If you
are looking to join in this river adventure, register today at www.floatyourfanny.ca. Those who
register online receive a discounted price and can order a limited edition “Survivor” t‐shirt.
Looking to get involved in the event, and not get wet? The Committee is seeking both
volunteers and sponsors. Volunteers are encouraged to visit the event website to fill out a
volunteer application form. www.floatyourfanny.ca under “volunteers wanted”. Sponsors are
asked to call Co‐Chair Barrileigh Price at 905‐885‐1721 to discover opportunities.
Winter hasn’t gotten the best of all the plans ‐ the Committee is still kicking off the spring
paddling season by hosting the Reel Paddling Film Festival on Saturday March 8 at the Capitol
Theatre. The Festival will feature films from around the globe that showcase the diversity and
intensity of the paddling world.
Port Hope is the second location for the 2014 World Tour. Tickets are $15 at the door. Doors
open at 6:00 pm, films start at 7:00 pm. The Film Fest will feature 12 films; the shortest film is 3
minutes, the longest is 20 minutes. There will be a cash bar available and door prizes. Visit
