Have a great adventure peoples!!! Ill be waiting close to the Finish line! As a person who watches this yearly and then fishes when opening steelhead comes this event does nothing to them. Didn't your mama teach you if you don't have something nice to say don't say anything.

It is (finally) the weekend, and World Fish Migration Day too! Migratory fish are crucial to the survival of many animal species, and millions of humans around the world! ๐ŸŸ Today, we strive to create awareness around their importance, and need for protection. ๐ŸŒŽ EXCEPT IN PORT HOPE!!! ๐Ÿ™

Great day for scaring fish and ruining spawning beds! ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿผโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Wishing all the best to fish & spawn!

I was on the river at Canton this morning at 7. Not a fish in sight. First canoe arrived early at 8 am. It will be a great day for the event.

Bet that water's a little chilly!!!!

Enjoy! The weather is great for it.

it's sunny and going to warm up happy floating, see you at the finish line.

Have fun

Just a reminder - B&D Liquidation has some wetsuits very cheap. They are the Costco liquidators. They are open today. It's a long, wet and cold journey.

What time does it start tomorrow ?

WISH I could be there.

Rainbow Trout Migration Statement

Over the past few days there has been increased discussion about the impact Float Your Fanny has on the river and the migrating fish. The local committee works closely every year with the Town of Port Hope, Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry with regards to using the river for the event. We use all the latest data, as well as the knowledge of the river from the authoritative organisations, to make our decisions on when to stage the event, and any safety postponements.

In the interest of clarification, these are the latest points from our MNRF communication on April 12:

- The section of watercourse from downtown to Sylvan Glen is considered relatively low quality spawning habit compared to the head waters of the Ganaraska. It is estimated that this section accounts for something less than 5% of spawning habitat compared to the upstream section. As such impacts should be minimal.
- The major Rainbow run has not yet happened due to the cold weather. Warmer temperatures are required to bring on the migration.
- Due to the fishing season opening on April 28th, MNRF would not recommend any further delays to the Ganny race, should April 21st be deemed unsuitable to run the event.
- Participants should not harass fish. Migrating fish will avoid the people and watercrafts.

Feedback from the GRCA, as confirmed by Councilor Bletcher at the Town Council meeting last night, is that the GRCA had no concerns with the change in date for the event and impacts to fish migration.

In addition, the committee spend many days after the event, both personally and with volunteer teams, making sure the river is returned back to a state better than before we held the event.

We hope that this clears up the misinformation that is circulating from other sources, and we look forward to seeing everyone out in Port Hope for the 37th Float Your Fanny Down the Ganny.

Gonna make a point... are there still fish in the ganny? Yes? This event has been running FOR YEARS! So as long as we have great groups working to help each other out then there will continue to be fish

Must be true then? I call bullshit. Ignore the below facts and you missed your ride in a crazy craft being portaged in a fish sanctuary. Absolutely absurd. Lol Read the below facts. If you think this entertaining tradition doesnt effect the spawn run....nothing rattles between your ears. In rivers and streams where trout are naturally reproducing, itโ€™s important to avoid disturbing spawning fish during this time. These trout are expending most of their energy on spawning. Angling for spawning fish adds undo stress. Additionally, extra care should be taken to avoid damaging trout spawning areas known as "redds". Trout deposit their eggs in a clean gravel bed where they are left to hatch in four to seven weeks. Wading through a redd can crush trout eggs or the trout fry that remain in the gravel for weeks after they hatch. By not fishing to spawning fish or disturbing their redds, anglers can help ensure strong future trout populations. The following tips will help you learbn how to identify redds, spawning fish, and the locations where spawning fish build redds in a river.

Steelhead (rainbow trout spawn at 40โ€™ Fahrenheit, which is about 5โ€™ Celsius. I know for a fact the rainbows have been coming up river as early as February and were full of half developed skeen. (Eggs) each rainbow will lay roughly 10000 eggs. No matter how you look at it, an abundance off eggs and fish will be disturbed and other wise destroyed. Smh ๐Ÿ˜”

Depends on the year to lol no fish are over the dam this year so by the time you have this event those spots will be prime spawning grounds lol maybe they should go pf research from the year before and not 10 years ago lol. This event is a joke anyways , kill the steelhead to make yourself look like idiots... money talks lol

FISH HABITAT PROTECTION - Apparently, according to Ontario Fish and Wildlife, the MNRF has no โ€œofficialโ€ approval authority over the event in the Ganaraska. Fish habitat protection is the responsibility of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Questions about potential fish habitat impacts should be directed to them.

FYI people are starting to find out the MNRF have no official place to approve or dis prove of the the race people are calling mnrf and they are sending them to FHP fisheries habitat protection program... just thought people would like to know ... i hope this don't get deleted

No testing has ever been done about survival of nesting pairs of trout as outlined in this summary. Please show me the data and I will kindly remove this post and reconsider my opinion on having the race this late.

Social media ruins everything these days no one cared years ago

Dan Sokay ... where r u now ???

Telling people that they will be excluded from future discussion if they don't remain silent now about their objections to the race being held is just PATHETIC!

Well as they say that as time goes on a few boats on a river never has stopped the fish from spawning that said a flooded river and major ice flow will kill more fish than a few suckers floating there boats down stream for a couple hours .

People try and ruin everyones fun. This event has been around for over 20yrs why is the fish a big deal now is it bc you all weren't't allow to bring your Dogs so now you are going on about the fish. There is alot more going on in this world stop trying to take the little bit of fun people have by taking this down grow up move on next

Whatever makes you sleep at night! You guys will see for yourselves the fish you will scare and swimming away from your contraptions! More than likely you will meet protestors on your travels! Take care and see you out there! ๐Ÿ˜Ž

I would like to invite you to read this article by the DFO outlining Canada's Pledge to protect and maintain marine life in our oceans and waterways. I find it interesting that the National goal reached is currently 5%. HMM.. 5% is a pretty interesting number. www.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/oceans/publications/mct-ocm/five-cinq-eng.html

Glad to see the matter clarified. The fish are smart staying in the lake were it is more comfortable.

Always two sides of the story. Glad I read this.

Thank you for clarifying the current situation see you Saturday

Thank you for the clarification and for your input

Same thing every year SMH

Glad of the clarification

Thank you for this. Can't wait ๐Ÿ˜Š

Thanks

Thank you!

It's not the event itself that is the issue, it's the TIMING of the event, and the home made junk craft that drag the bottom. Canoes and kayaks are ok in my books, it's the 'crazy craft' barely boats that are my issue. if it were to happen earlier or into June, I don't think there'd be many people complaining. Fact is, fish are getting paired up, they are on beds, a shadow of person is sometimes enough to spook them off the beds, let alone the people in home made contraptions.
